Swimming in Australia
February 10, 2012
Australia is known as one of the top summer locations in the world. This island continent features miles and miles of beaches and coastlines. But the summer swimming and water fun is not just limited to the beaches found in Australia. There are several other locations found in the ‘land down under’ where tourists and travelers can have fun in the water. Here are examples of the locations in Australia where tourists can swim and visit:
Beaches
The beaches in Australia are still its main draw when it comes to swimming and other water activities. There are over 16,000 miles of beaches found in the Australian coastline. The northern coasts feature beaches with smaller and calmer waves for casual beach goers and family outings, while the southern coasts have huge rolling waves for hardcore surfers and strong swimmers. Among the famous beaches found in Australia includes the famed Bondi Beach in Sydney and the renowned Surfers Paradise in the Gold Coast.
Hot Spring
There are several other natural bodies of water in Australia, and one of the most visited are the thermal pools or hot springs located just south of Darwin. These thermal pools are heated below the earth’s surface and bubble up to form pools. The pools in Australia are beautiful and most of them are surrounded by rich vegetation and beautiful foliage. Most of these pools have resorts and tours surrounding them for better access for tourists.
Lakes
Most people believe that inland Australia is mostly made up of dry desert land, but the fact is, there are several bodies of water located there. Among them are the natural fresh water lakes. Among these lakes are the four cirque lakes found in mainland Australia. These lakes are the Blue Lake, Lake Cootapatamba, Lake Albina, and Lake Club. The Local government permits the use of most of the fresh water lakes for fishing and recreation of local and tourists.
Rivers
There are also several Rivers found in the continent of Australia. These rivers are largely untouched by the tourist industry and are used for recreation by most of the locals that live near the banks. Tourists are of course welcome to join in and have fun in the local rivers of Australia. Among the most notable rivers in Australia includes the Mighty Murray, the longest river on the island, Murrumbidgee River in Wagga Wagga, and Darling River in New South Wales.
